Benylin Paediatric Syrup — diethylene glycol
Three authorities in this register recalled the same lots of Benylin Paediatric Syrup within six days of each other in April 2024: South Africa on the 11th, Rwanda on the 12th and Botswana on the 16th. The lots are 329303 and 329304, and Rwanda's notice states the defect — an unacceptably high level of diethylene glycol. The recall did not begin at any of them. Botswana's notice says in its own words that it is alerting the public to a recall issued by NAFDAC in Nigeria, and NAFDAC is one of four authorities this register does not fetch: their sites ask automated visitors to stay away and we do as they ask. So the action that started this cluster is not in the register, and the earliest date shown here is the earliest we hold rather than the earliest that happened. No propagation lag is computed. That figure is measured against a WHO Medical Product Alert and WHO issued none for this product, so there is no reference date and none has been invented.
| Authority | Ctry | Action date | Reference date | Lag (days) | Record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAHPRA | ZA | 11 Apr 2024 | none | not computable | DEA-ZA-2024-32671519 |
| RWANDAFDA | RW | 12 Apr 2024 | none | not computable | DEA-RW-2024-0088 |
| BOMRA | BW | 16 Apr 2024 | none | not computable | DEA-BW-2024-93841841 |
A negative lag means the national authority acted before the WHO alert. Where either date is missing the cell says the lag is not computable rather than showing a zero — an undated notice is not a same-day notice.

What the lag shows
- SAHPRA (ZA) is the earliest action dated to a day, on 11 April 2024.
- No WHO alert has been recorded for this event, so no lag can be computed.
- Every constituent notice carries a date.
- Actions recorded across 3 markets: ZA, RW, BW. An absence is an absence of a recorded published action, not a statement that an authority did nothing.
Why it matters
“Recalled in one market, still on shelves in the next” is the question procurement agencies, donors and insurers actually need answered — and it falls straight out of a join across the register.
